i was wondering if there might be a new 'Best Of' down the pipe. you guys can argue what should and should not be on said project if it came to happen. i am asking John, is there a way you are considering this? would you?

I think "Best Of" compilations typically come at the behest of the record company. I read an interview back in 1998 with keyboardist Nick Rhodes, where he was none-too-pleased with Capitol-EMI launching a new (at the time) Duran Duran greatest hits package ("GREATEST").

The label was besieged with fan emails for excluding certain recent singles from the 90s, and caved to the point the label ultimately DID seek some input from the band for some tweaks to the final tracklist.

EMI didnt seem to think they needed band member involvement, until the fans spoke up.

I think John and the band seem to enjoy a closer relationship with Serafino and Frontiers, than they may have with Geffen in the 80s. If the label did wish to release a "best of" package around the songs of PHOENIX, OMEGA, "X X X", and GRAVITAS, I suspect (or would HOPE!) that Frontiers Records would coordinate it with the goodwill of John & /ASIA\ involved.

AA i would think Frontiers would give the band a wide berth, IF there was a 'best of'. i was just wondering. i remember talking to an AR person with Geffen back in the day. trust me, i get your point.

Are "best of" compilations even all that viable in the digital age?  In other words, why buy a best of compilation, when you can easily create your own personal "best of."  Even if a couple of new songs are included, they can easily be downloaded from itunes on an individual basis.  I would much rather see the band release live material from recent tours.  If the band were to release a "best of", I really like what they did with Gravitas, releasing a bonus disc with the Valkyrie video, live concert footage, and interviews with the band.

I think "Best of X" compilations are all right for the beginner who is unfamiliar with a group except for one or two singles.  Such people might download one or two songs, but a "Best of X" album would expose them to a little bit more of the group's potential.  From there, casual fans can evolve into devoted fans.  I heard the first two songs from Asia for several mornings on my local AM station, and it made me look for their albums -- as luck would have it, the local Sky City had leftover copies of Astra on vinyl and cassette.  Get up and go, indeed!

Having said that, I was mildly disappointed by Then and Now. I was in the Army then, and my pals and I felt it was neither a true 'best of X' nor a new /ASIA\ album per se.  I liked Days Like These, which might have been a bigger hit if Geffen had put more money behind it.  But most of the other "new" songs felt like outtakes from Astra, and while they were affable, I do not think too many fans are requesting these tunes today.  I blame Geffen more than anybody else, and they did not rectify this mistake until 10 years later with The Very Best.

Here's looking forward to new live albums!

P.S.  I often wonder how Rhino might have treated the band -- I know they deal in "classic" stuff but Live in Moscow rocked!

Side note...recently read as part of the Sterling fiasco that David Geffen, supposedly worth $6.5 billion, is interested in purchasing the LA Clippers.  Wondering how much of that early fortune was made on the backs of Asia ?
