I arrived in Nagoya last night from Los Angeles.  Long trip, LAX-SFO-NRT-NGO.  I am looking forward to seeing four Asia concerts in Japan this week.  First concert is Nagoya tonight, Osaka on Wednesday then two concerts in Shibuya on Thursday and Friday nights.  Very excited to hear new songs from Gavitas and all my favorites from past records.  It is overcast but a nice day in Nagoya.  I will meet up with my very good friends DD and KC tomorrow in Osaka and we will see the Osaka and Shibuya shows together.  I will see Tatsuya, Tomoo and Hideo on Friday as well.  I hope to see more friends from the guestbook at the shows.

Welcome, Dennis, indeed the weather suits you, sir. Will see you later on. I hope you're doing better with the lag than I am---this time it's been the worst ever.

Thank you very much, John.  Yes, the lag is rough.  Seen more of my room than Nagoya.  I'm certain once you hit the stage nobody will know.  I envy you, sir.  Walking over toward Zepp in about an hour to get a bite.  Can't wait for the show.

Dennis,

You simply enjoy John's music at a level that many of us can only dream about. I love your photos and anecdotes from his shows!

If I could do what you do, travel & time-wise, I probably would! LOL.

I enjoy so many different music artists & genres - but the well that John's lyrics and voice spring from is a source of inspiration to me that perpetually touches and moves me.

Thanks for always sharing your tales of new shows in different lands and myriad cities (and cruise ships!) with us here at the Guestbook. I'll be reading!

(PS - By any chance, Dennis, have you ever had a chance to visit a RECORD STORE while in Japan?? I have several imports from there, and have wondered what it might feel like shopping among the record or CD bins in Tokyo or Osaka, et al...)

Yes, see you in Shibuya!

Yes, record stores are a crucial part of every visit I make to Japan.  I will be going on Thursday and Friday with my good friend DD!

Tonight's concert was fantastic!   Everyone was at the top of their game.  Great set list, great lights and awesome sound by Steve Rispin!

Japan venues are very strict about cameras and video but here are just a few I was able to get:

Dennis,

Enjoy the rest of the Japan excursion! It sounds like such a cool life experience.

What is some of the /ASIA\ merch available this time out for the GRAVITAS Tour?

Here is all the merchandise selling at the shows in Japan...

http://udo.jp/Goods/Asia/index.html

The merchandise will likely be different when they tour the US and Europe.

I bought one of each shirt, a program and a tote.  I have my items pictured here...

Some detailed notes about the Nagoya concert last night...

I arrived about 5:00PM and got some dinner nearby.  Purchased my ticket and got in the queue about 5:40PM and doors opened promptly at 6:00PM.  Went directly to the merchandise table and purchased two of the three shirts offered, a program and a tote and then went into the seating area to find my seat.  I was seated in Row I(9), Seat 1 on the aisle directly in line with Carl about 30 feet or so from the front of the stage.  I walked back to the lighting desk and met Alec and waited for Steve Rispin to come out.  Steve came out to his desk about 6:40PM and we spoke for maybe 10 minutes.  Always great to see Steve.  A really great guy and top notch FOH man.  Returned to my seat and lights went down about 7:05PM.  1812 Overture played through the PA for about a minute before the band walked onto the stage.  Sam led the rest of the guys out.  The Nagoya crowd gave a great reception many people stood to wave to the band.  The intro music faded out and Carl counted in the opening song, Sole Survivor.  At the first note of the song, the entire crowd came to their feet and would remain on their feet through the entire concert.  Normally after a song or two people sit down and especially during the acoustic numbers but this crown remained standing the entire show!  Sole Survivor is one of my favorite songs so to open with this was a special treat for me.  John sounded strong on this opening number even though he goes near the top his range at the end of every other verse line.  He reached the note with ease this evening and his voice overall was superb all evening.  They did the instrumental middle eight section a little different tonight.  Instead of going directly into the bridge, John sang the chorus one more time a capella along with every fan’s voice supporting him.  Then Geoff continued with the flute part while the band joined back in.  Sam played a stunning solo through to the outro.  They began Wildest Dreams immediately after.  Another stellar vocal performance from John and lovely piano fills from Geoff during the last verse as usual.  John greeted the crowd by shouting, “Konbanwa! [Good Evening!]” followed by his famous phrase, “Kimitachi saiko dayo! [You are the best!]” made famous on the UK Night After Night Live record recorded at Sunn Plaza in Nakano, Japan back in 1979.  He then introduced the next song, Face On The Bridge.  Geoff’s intro began a superb live version of this song from XXX.  They followed with Time Again another one of my favorites from the first LP.  Sam played a little different part during the guitar/keyboard trade off parts following each chorus which sounded nice.  Next was the first song from Gravitas for the evening which was Valkyrie.  This began like the record with John’s vocal and Geoff’s harmony vocal  supporting John.  This sounded very full and rich in this hall.  Next was a stunning performance of I Know  How You Feel by John and Geoff alone.  This was followed by acoustic versions of Voice of America and The Smile Has Left Your Eyes with John on 12-string acoustic and Sam on 6-string acoustic.  The full-band version of TSHLYE followed.  Next were fantastic live versions of An Extraordinary Life, Gravitas, Days Like These, Go and Don’t Cry.  Of special note were John’s bass pedals during Gravitas, very nice!  Carl followed Don’t Cry with a solo.  One of the best performances as I can recall.  He was just perfect.  Every stick trick was superb and just the overall playing was terrific.  As the band came back to the stage, Carl asked if we wanted another one then had to clarify if we wanted another solo or another song.  Only Time Will Tell was next followed by Open Your Eyes.  The band walked off but returned soon to continuous applause for Heat Of The Moment as the encore.  The ending included a deafening crowd sing along of the chorus and then the band modulated the key of the song up a half step and ended for the evening.  I was able to chat again with Alec and Steve before leaving the main room.  I went to the backstage area to meet up with Val and she brought me and two other guests backstage.  I was able to meet Aki then and also spoke to Martin.  After just a few minutes we were brought in to meet with the band.  I received a very nice greeting from all members and John quoting lines from the British comedy show, The Fast Show.  Carl pointed to my program and offered to have the band sign it which they did.  We then posed for a couple of photos chatted just a short while and I said goodbye to all.  This was again a very special evening for me.  I always enjoy seeing  Asia in concert but there is something very special about seeing them in Japan.  Very special thanks to John and the entire band for a superb evening and thanks to Martin and Val at QEDG and Aki at UDO.  Arigato gozaimasu!  Now off to breakfast and catch the bullet train to Osaka and meet up with my good friends KC and DD to see the second show of the tour.

No, no solo for Sam.  That would have been nice.  His playing was exceptional.  He really added a cool feel to all of the songs.

Supposed to be a keyboard solo tonight!

Thanks Brenda, not even worthy though!

Now heading over to meet up with my friends KC and DD for tonight's show.  Night two of four.  Asia is such a great live band.  Very much looking forward to another superb evening!
