I just re-read this page, and this quote of yours about "great classical music" gave me pause to think, John.

My grandfather was born in 1913 on a rural farm (to Ukranian & Polish parents) in Saskatchewan, Canada - and as much as Papa loved to sing, I was surprised when he once nonchalantly mentioned they had no radio as a child.

He went on to detail how his love of music grew: "kitchen parties" (singing and playing music indoors with the family, when snowed-in by harsh Canadian blizzards), and singing in his church and learning organ.

One thing Papa said that grabbed me was that "hit songs" were (primarily) a phrase for best-selling SHEET MUSIC.

"Most people couldn't afford radios at the turn of the century. Hit songs were the 'sheet music' transcriptions that were selling the best at general stores around the country, and in piano stores if you were in a big city like Saskatoon or Toronto."

i don't know any more about Plovdiv show right now, but it should e really good. We get a day to run through with the orchestra, and the atmosphere when the amphitheater(built under Trajan's lash) is lit is fantastic. If Easyjet flies to Plovdiv,go for it. Bugger the strike.

This sounds like a show EVERY /ASIA\ fan wishes they could attend!

Some select shows, I suspect, will always resonate with longer-lasting memories than others... this sounds like a night that will linger long for both fans AND performers.

I look forward to some reports back, from some lucky boots on the ground, with reviews and photos!

Ryanair fly from Stanstead for a good price but the return journey could be part mule, part swim then hitch hiking the rest. I am really tempted but it is short notice and the wife can't swim! Could go alone!!!

Unfortunately I cannot go to Plovdiv as I will be in Madrid the day after for an exhibition. No good flights from Italy to Plovdiv anyway... try "Wizzair" company (from Italy there is a direct flight from Milan to Sofia, maybe from UK you can find some better solutions).

Thanks for the info Elena. Unfortunately the logistics of trying to get to Plovdiv at such short notice are proving too big a hurdle. Amongst many things I would need several swaps at my work.
I just have a feeling that this is somewhere that I should be, a bit like how I felt about The Stables.
I wonder if there are any regulations regarding John's bass. This amazing Amphitheatre has been around for centuries, but 2 hours of heavy bass might change that!

Let us pray.  Dear God, please allow a three-day pass from life without worry so that Vid can joyfully attend the unique ASIA concert event in the Roman Theatre in Plovdiv.  Bless him with safe travel to be our GB rep in attendance.  Amen.

(Pass the basket, too.)

Hope you will be able to organize your trip to Plovdiv and see Asia playing into that amazing Amphitheatre! If you have the feeling to go, you will have to go! It is exactly what's happen to me everytime I decide to go to see Asia! Even if there is a long way to arrive to the Asia gig I have always been very happy to attend all their gigs!

I saw CP and Bruce Pilato last night in "lost wages." Great performance with Jordan Rudess and Rudy Sarzo, also Carl played songs with Jon Anderson.  Bruce told me of the cancellation this morning.  I'm glad I did not buy my plane tickets yet but I had planned to go to the Stuttgart show with a friend who lives there.  I hope to see you at the other Germany shows if I can take care of some pressing things here.

J, what was the old favourite which was played at the concert, or is that being kept under wraps?
