I wouldn't ever say it as Asia versus Icon, you know  that it's just two sides of the same coin.

Sorry, poor choice of words on my part.  I meant comparatively as opposed to competitively.

Hey gang and Johan, While listening to FOTT tonight rather loudly, I picked up on something I noticed that may be a very minor production flaw, or maybe simply a flaw in the download.  And if it is not, I apologize in advance, honestly I mean no disrespect in ANY way.  Listen carefully, and at 1:32 between the words,  "twice" and "Cold" you will hear what sounds to be a vocal artifact maybe left in there by accident.  Do you hear it?  You have to have a good sound system and turn it up a bit.  The other possibility is it is a flaw in my download off the Frontier site.  The only reason I bring this up is that if in fact it is an error, it can possibly be cleaned up (with protools) before final production.  Again I mean no disrespect at all, I love the new soundbytes we have been given and I think this new record will be AWESOME.

Hi Alphadog, I don't hear it. But what I hear is that much of this is too loud and is distorted even when played low.
3:05 'All Because Of You' and other parts too are actually distorted.

Most distortion is caused by the compressed MP3 files.  You notice the same thing if you "burn" a CD into a MP3 file.

That's why I (still) buy CDs whenever possible.  I don't mind buying the occassional MP3 download off of Itunes, etc., however for the real good stuff (Like Asia), I need the CD.

Once Omega is released, do a back-to-back comparison of FOTT on CD vs. the MP3 Frontiers download and you will probably notice the difference.

I think you are just hearing the 'ssssss' in twice, but the volume is cranked up so loud that it sounds weird like sizzling distortion. Now that I listen closer in headphones there is distortion all over this. Sounds like Frontiers is doing what radio stations do now when they put it on website where they make it unnaturally loud.

Oh yeah, you are right. Maybe what he heard is on the mp3.

But what I heard is on the wav that you can also download.

It has a very unique opening, in my humble opinion, which is excellent! The chorus is very strong and it's great to hear Steve playing underscore Johan. Muy Bien Asia!

Should I buy the ICON Cd's in order? What is the best way for a newbie to listen?

I'd say in order. And enjoy.

Do Icon in order, but don't overlook the live CD as well as the DVD. They're perfect compliments to one another and you'll be able to enjoy  the growth cycle of the project. The DVD is really something special, I can't stop "ravin'" about "Raven".

PS Most of this sage advice was given to me by all the other GBers when I was getting ready to sample Icon....just giving credit where credit is due.

Sounds like there's some digital delay on the vocal track, and maybe it's slightly overlapping the first word of the next line as the delay and reverb tails die off. Also, Carl is bashing away on the high-hats during the verses which sits up in those upper frequency ranges that can be "damaged" by MP3 conversion.

For the geeks: I examined the file using Adobe Audition 1.5 through JBL 4408A & Yamaha NS10 studio monitors and didn't hear anything out of the ordinary.

Listen again. There's distortion. I thought the same about the mp3 so I listened to the wave format and it is the same. Sounds pretty hot overall. Maybe this is just for the promotion where they make it very loud.

I knew you would do that em!

The only thing I noticed while playing through ProTools is that the levels are nearly pegged throughout. Not clipped, but close enough to the ceiling to dust it. There are two reasons for that;

One is this idea that louder is better held by so many of our suited record company friends. Maybe they have their reasons, but I don't share their view. When tracks like that ever do make it to radio they just get compressed to smithereens again by the station and the result sounds like mud in your car.

The other reason (which is easier for me to warm up to) is that the band is ROCKING OUT! That song is pretty much full tilt all the way through so the dynamics are topped out from beginning to end anyway. They've done a remarkable job keeping the vocals out front on top of all that signal though.

Any true opinions about it should be reserved until you have the disc in your hands. There's no telling the path that WAV file took before it landed on your computer.
