Something struck me today about the Asia/iCon debate. If you take the bonus track from the Japanese Phoenix--- "I Will Remember You'. With the Palmer/Howe contributions very much played down, and Hugh McDowell more audible because of the acoustic nature of the mix--does it suddenly turn into Asia's sickly bastard brother?

Well...I guess I'm not sure what you mean by that, J.  I could hear the song performed both ways, truthfully - much like the iCon treatments of HOTM, TSHLYE, etc. - not at all bastardized.  It's a beautiful piece, and would easily stand up to different arrangements.  Then again, I freely admit to a biased opinion!

Johan, Horace, Kinky and Riles (who really does rock by the way).

Sounds like a new law firm. I'd use 'em.

JK

P.S. Seriously, great news on the Icon front.

G1--maybe you haven't heard the acoustic version of 'IWRY',but I think it's better than the album version by a garden mile. There is nothing illegitimate--or ugly-- about iCon,either.

Is that the version on the UK release of Phoenix?  Somebody posted a sample of the Japanese version a while back and it sounded very similar.

I haven't heard it yet , you are correct.  I suppose my point was that there's something very elegant (and unique) about what you and GD do with iCon - and some songs really shine that way.  It just has a different feel than Asia - even the stuff with more of a rock edge has its own personality.  For example, I can't imagine "Meet Me at Midnight" done by Asia, and it's hard for me to imagine it done by anyone but iCon (or you, solo).  Not to say that the music can't overlap, but it sounds different when played by the alter ego, as it were.  My guess is that the "personality" factor of iCon is strongly tied into the close ties (musical and personal) that you have with Horace - they are more pronounced in your work with iCon.  Definitely nothing ugly about iCon!!  How could there be with you and Horace at the helm?

I completely agree. So I have to ask -- how did one version make it on the CD and the other end up as a bonus track? Was the acoustic version recorded later and it was all about timing? Was it a band decision and you were out voted? Was it the record company?

I'm still keeping my fingers crossed that the acoustic version will be performed with either Asia or iCon next year and I am there to see it.

No,it doesn't work like that,Els.
The songs were recorded as they appear on the album,as Asia, the four of us. Then electric instruments are removed, and acoustic instruments replace some of the electrics. Then the track is remixed.No-one was outvoted. I didn't know how good the 'acoustic' version would sound until it was done. Not every song would benefit from this treatment. For instance, 'Never Again' would probably not sound so good done this way.

Really good news! A new Asia and a new iCon CD in the same year! And I don't want to complain about that, never ever!   But that means no John Wetton live this year in Germany and that's rather disappointing
Okay, hope for 2009, but that's a long time.
