Howdy all,

While I have always, first and foremost, been a fan of the *Original* Asia from their debut album in 1982 when I was 17, till the present, have everything they've ever recorded and released in multiple formats and versions, and have seen the band since their reforming close to a dozen times, there was a place for the Geoff Downes/John Payne Asia when it existed.

No, the chemistry that Wetton/Downes share was never replicated, the 90's band sound was distinctly different, and they were never on the level of John Wetton's band musically, it is doubtful Geoff would have recorded and played with Payne had Payne "sucked". Overall they did have a number of "good" songs over the course of their time together, and kept the Asia name out there in the public eye.

That being said, to get a balanced understanding of the band in both of it's incarnations you would best be served by picking up the second and third editions of Dave Gallants' book. Not surprisingly, being an avid collector myself, I have all three editions.

While I never saw the Payne era band perform live, the Downes/Payne's version did keep the Asia name out there, making the return of the original band we all know and love that much sweeter.

Just my 2 cents ...

Peace,

Jeff

The toughest thing in the world was making a business decision to not book the Payne version of Asia.

They were offered to our place.  At the time we were #1 in attendance in the US and Canada for houses that sat between 1,000 and 3,000.

You look at the trades and they weren't getting any attendance.  It was during the Aqua tour with Carl and Steve as a special guest.  Broke my heart.

When John and the guys reunited we probably would have tried to book two nights.

I have the first and third version and I am not sure if I have the 2nd.    but, I know my information was used in the (first) book and as for the third, well, I am sorry, but it is revisionist history,   more of a tour program than a book.  Gallant did his best to erase what happened between 1992-2005.   That's wrong, if you want the complete story you have to include everything.   I last had communication with Gallant some years ago, I emailed him asking him a question in regards to UK, before the reunion happened.  He sent me a very terse response, and since then I haven't communicated with him!   Jerk!

Dave is alive and well. I saw him at the Asia show this past September at BB King's in NYC. I spoke with him  briefly. He was with The Admiral, Ricky Nelson. I hung out with Rick for about an hour after the show but Dave was not around, maybe on a plane back to Toronto.

guess you got to see John and the new kid in the band ?

My seat on this tour was next to Sam, I loved every minute of that seat on stage.
that kid can play and the guys seem more excited than ever.[smile]

Thank you all for the "Welcomes" but I am not worthy.
Conan, we met at the Asia show at the Best Buy, [Nokia] Theatre on the eve of Hurricane Sandy. I was searching for The Magnate after the show, so I could have a drink with him. I asked the merchandise guy and you were at the stand with Sue Pisces. I recognized her by fotos on the GB. Re BB's, it was so crowded, that once we were seated, we did not get up again.
I happened to be seated next to Rick and Dave Gallant, just the luck of the draw.I like Rick a lot because he laughs at my jokes, so we hung out for about an hour after the show, then I gave Rick some spare change so he could get a bus back to Newark.
Paul C, I met Geoff after the show. John was not around but I trust that he recognised me from the stage. I used the Brit [Recognise] because John would be doing the recognising in this scenario. I did however recognize John from my seat.
Here is a tip for all the NYC/Jersey fans. Ian McDonald attends most of John's NYC shows, since he lives in Manhattan. Ian has an ear problem with loud music, so he takes frequent breaks and stands out in the lobby, [At BB's right by the stairway.] He is very fan friendly. He knows me by now and always answers any questions that I have about The Mellotron or writing "Court of the CK."
Of course, you must be able to recognize Ian [Recognise if you are from the UK]  or you will not know who he is. Do not approach just anyone standing in the lobby. It could be someone from Newark.
Greetings to PK in The UK. Will email you later.
