"XXX" means 30 years in Roman numerals. We know that. It was a very "ASIA"-sounding title for an album, as John once said here. The Google search for "ASIA XXX" took us fans to some unspeakably pornographic places, to say the least LOL LOL...

But I recently, unexpectedly, was given reason to ponder what ELSE "XXX" could possibly connote...

While in Orlando for my 18th wedding anniversary Labor Day weekend, my wife and I stayed at Disney's Caribbean Beach Resort. Their main pool & waterslide area was themed to replicate an ocean-front colonial Spanish fortress - and beside it was a themed kiddie pool: a shipwrecked galleon for kids.

But as I noticed the large letters "XXX" on the "rum barrel" dumping water on giggling children below, I suddenly thought of the /ASIA\ album. My mind raced to distant memories of Bugs Bunny and cartoons with flasks and barrels labelled "XXX" that (even as kids) we somehow understood meant moonshine or strong brew...

Was a simple album title with a red dragon, possibly a lovely label belying a deeper ("stronger") meaning implying recovery from drinking?

Wikipedia's "XXX" listing refers to a treatise published in London in 1829 called "The Art of Brewing," which indicated that (particularly for the purpose of levelling duty taxes) that casks of beer were labelled with a trademark of "X" according to their strength of alcoholic content. Ratings ranged from "X" (small beer) to "XX" up to the strongest ale casks stamped with "XXX" (pronounced 'triple x' then, just like the album title today).

It may well be my curiosity running in the wrong direction. I've thought of that LOL!

But... the ironic sight of small children from ages 2 - 10 or so playing beneath a giant Disney-fied pirate ship with the letters "XXX" tipping precariously above their heads made me suddenly wonder about the origins of the ALBUM TITLE...

"Did JW intentionally (if subtly) choose the title of the 3rd /ASIA\ reunion era album to hold 'TWIN' meanings? (Does 'XXX', as an album concept, both A- pay tribute to the band's banner 30th Anniversary year, *AND* also B- recognize John's hard-won & on-going sobriety...?)"

Either way - John & the band's successful "return to duty" since 2006, and especially John's daily rise above his battle "to keep the evil demon away" ("XXX"?) - are remarkable.

Delusional, perhaps ?  He has routinely provided substantial evidence to support such a fact.

AA, yes XXX can refer to a "straight edge" lifestyle, which means refraining from using alcohol, tobacco and other recreational drugs. Other meanings can warn of an excess of something or very strong. It also denotes "kisses". But, it could just mean 30 years, only John and Asia really know....[smile]
